A Coquitlam school district director specializing in facilities is being recognized by the provincial government for his years of dedication to the livelihood of students.

Ivano Cecchini was one of 12 winners listed today (Oct. 15) by the Premier's Awards for Excellence in Education, which honoured teachers, staff and administrators for the work they've accomplished over the last two years.

Cecchini is the executive director of facilities and planning services for School District 43 (SD43) — a position he's held for more than four years.

He won the district leadership category, which, according to the province, is given to the staff member that exemplifies "as a visionary leader" for innovation and equity that contributes to student success.

"Every day, you go above and beyond to put students first," said Premier John Horgan in a news release.

He helped launch the awards four years ago as a means to acknowledge education champions in B.C. in public, Indigenous and independent school systems.

"Their enthusiasm for supporting and mentoring students builds on their commitment to ensure learners of all ages achieve success in school and in life," added Lt. Gov. Janet Austin.

"I believe deeply in the importance of high quality and accessible education as a foundation to a prosperous society and is critical to enhancing the well-being of all citizens."

Earlier this year, Cecchini played a role in the unveiling of a new playground at Coquitlam's R.C. MacDonald Elementary as part of a $5-million provincial investment announcement for new amenities at schools across the province.

Over his recent tenure, he was also part of the persistent team to get funding confirmed for a $135-million joint middle-secondary school on Burke Mountain.

Cecchini helped develop a concept plan that involved pleading the case for why the neighbourhood needed a new school and the project's construction oversight, as well as its costs and financial risks.

This was ultimately approved and unveiled at the end of August, providing 1,000 seats by fall 2026 to accommodate Burke Mountain's growing population.

Cecchini was honoured in a recent ceremony at Government House in Victoria.

In addition to his award, Cecchini also received $5,000 to go towards professional learning, which, broken down, included a $3,000 taxable personal bursary and $2,000 for SD43.

Cecchini started as a principal for SD43 facilities initiatives in 2012 before joining facilities and planning services as an assistant secretary treasurer in 2014.

He was then promoted as the division's executive director in March 2018.
