Remembrance Day 2021 will once again be a quiet affair due to COVID-19 protocols and efforts to keep the virus from spreading.
That means there will be no public events at cenotaphs in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam or Port Moody.
However, special ceremonies will be held for veterans at local legions and commemorative wreaths will be placed at the local monuments.
Here are a few ways local residents who wish to honour Canadian veterans can do so for Thursday, Nov. 11:
BUY A POPPY
- Purchase a poppy at a local retailer or online. Funds raised go to support veterans, education and other programs.
PAINT A POPPY
From 1 to 4 p.m. beginning Monday (Nov. 1) at Blue Mountain Park in Coquitlam (corner of King Albert Avenue and Veterans Way), you can paint a poppy with supplied materials or submit a message via email at [email protected].

- Wednesday, Nov. 3 = 1 to 4 p.m.
- Thursday, Nov. 4 = 1 to 4 p.m.
- Friday, Nov. 5 = 3 to 7 p.m

ATTEND A TALK
- Purchase a poppy at a local retailer.
- The Remembrance Day Talk: Welcome to Flanders Fields - Canada in the Ypres Salient 1915-1917 by historian John Goheen.
- The talk will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the Glen Pine Pavilion (1200 Glen Pine Art). Pre-registration required via www.coquitlam.ca/registration (604-927-4386) = Course ID 71713
CHECK OUT THE WREATHS
- Commemorative wreaths will be placed at Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam cenotaphs (not a public event). Corporations and large agencies purchase them to be displayed on Nov. 11.
TWO MINUTES OF SILENCE
- Invite-only events at Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam legions on Remembrance Day.
- Citizens encouraged to have two minutes of silence where ever they are at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11
- Watch Canadian Remembrance Day event, starting at approximately 10:45 p.m.
- The ceremony will be live at the National War Memorial; watch it on national television stations or on the Royal Canadian Legion’s Facebook Page.

WATCH A DOCUMENTARY
Port Moody Film Society screening Peter Jackson’s World War 1 documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.) in Port Moody.
