Port Moody says it’s ready for the snow to fly.
In a report to council tonight, Nov. 26, Jeff Little, the city’s manager of operations, said an additional $450,000 in funding from the province’s growing communities fund that was approved in May 2023 has enabled Port Moody’s replacement of a three-quarter ton pickup truck with a one-ton vehicle equipped with a plow, salter and brine unit.
That will allow quicker and more efficient clearing of multi-use paths as well as plowing and salting of local roads, said Little.
As well, a new brine making facility is up and running which will allow crews to use brine to prevent ice buildup more frequently, especially on pedestrian routes.
It will also save money and be easier on the environment as less salt will be used, said Little.
The improvements were sparked by discussions at a special town hall on how Port Moody handles snow removal from its streets and sidewalks that was held in February 2023.
Mayor Meghan Lahti said at the time while city crews “do an amazing job” during snow events, there’s always rooms for improvement.
“We know that snow and ice on our roads and sidewalks can have a big impact on people’s lives.”
Snow removal in Port Moody is guided by the city’s winter road maintenance policy that was first implemented in 2017.
It give first priority for clearance to major arterial routes and pedestrian areas within 800 metres of the Inlet Centre and Moody Centre SkyTrain stations, followed by collector and local connector routes and then neighbourhood local roads.
To accommodate snow removal efforts, seasonal parking restrictions have also been implemented on some city streets as well. They’re in place only during snowfall events on portions of April Road, Burrard Crescent, Sycamore Drive and View Street.
Owners of private property are responsible for clearing adjacent sidewalks by 10 a.m. following a snowfall.
