Coquitlam RCMP responded to a report of a man with a weapon near Panorama Heights Elementary on Feb. 21, 2023.

Coquitlam RCMP's response to a weapons report on Plateau Boulevard near Paddock Drive this week left some parents and neighbours concerned.

Several police vehicles descended on École Panorama Heights Elementary (1455 Johnson St.) around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 23), requiring the principal to call remaining students and adults into the building.

Parent Wali Adel said his daughter attends the school and was staying late to participate in an art class.

He explained his wife was at the school to pick up their daughter, but were surprised when they saw police at the school with guns.

"They were [a] little shaken up," Adel told the Tri-City News following the incident.

Parents were informed by the principal via email that RCMP were searching for a person of interest, and students were called back inside the school "out of an abundance of caution."

Still, Adel said he was wondering what happened with the investigation and whether it was concluded.

In a statement to the Tri-City News, Coquitlam Mounties state that a person of interest was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

The incident has been resolved and the file is closed.
