Healthcare pros recognized for going above and beyond at Port Moody hospital

The Fraser Health Above and Beyond Awards recognize the dedication and achievements of staff, medical professionals, volunteers and teams at the regional health authority

The work done by a couple of healthcare professionals at Port Moody's Eagle Ridge Hospital may never be seen directly by patients, but it will affect the quality of their care.

Kendra Harding-Belacourt, a licensed practical nurse educator in the hospital’s emergency department, and emergency physician Dr. Kenneth Chan, have been recognized with Fraser Health Authority Above and Beyond Awards for their behind-the-scenes efforts.

Harding-Belacourt is one of three winners of a Best Collaboration Award for her ability to bring a sense of calm and order to the busy and sometimes chaotic emergency department that allows her colleagues to perform at the top of their game.

“Kendra has stepped up as a leader to support our licensed practical nurses, health care aides, Health Care Access Program staff and unit clerks,” said Marsha Mullen, the manager of clinical operations at Eagle Ridge Hospital, in a news release.

As a practical nurse educator, Harding-Belacourt ensures new staff members make a smooth transition into the emergency department by providing the support they need to focus on providing the best possible care for patients.

“Her hands-on approach encourages our staff to actively integrate quality initiatives into their day-to-day work,” said Mullen.

Harding-Belacourt said she learned the importance of having supportive colleagues early in her nursing career that began when she was just 19.

“I was quite young and everyone mothered me,” she said.

Now a mother three children herself, Harding-Belacourt’s nurturing nature is having an impact on the next generation of health care professionals.

“She’s always helping, she’s always facilitating,” said Jessica Brocklehurst, a licensed practical nurse at Eagle Ridge. “She makes you want to be a better nurse. She’s almost like a little mother hen to all of us.”

Harding-Belacourt said ensuring everyone in the emergency department is on the same page helps soothe even the most stressful days.

“The culture is so important for everyone to feel safe,” she said. “It’s huge for them to have someone they can go to to enhance their skill set.”

Chan is a Fraser Health Hero for helping guide the implementation of a new electronic health record system at Eagle Ridge.

According to a news release, he provided extensive support to doctors and nurses as the new records system was rolled out, including “cheat sheets,” instructional videos and in-person training sessions to guide their understanding and use of the new system, as well as promptly replied to their emails, texts and calls.

“His positive attitude and approachable demeanour make it easy for colleagues to seek his help,” said Dr. Pearlly Ng, a physician at the emergency departments of Eagle Ridge and Royal Columbian hospitals.

Other categories comprising the Above and Beyond Awards that showcase the dedication and achievements of staff, medical professionals, volunteers and teams at Fraser Health are:
