Stories from Tri-City News headlines of decades past is a recurring feature as the publication marks its 40th anniversary in 2024.

After 10 years as Port Moody’s head librarian, Brian Pulham couldn’t have been more excited while checking out the city’s new facility that was nearing completion as part of the $11.5-million civic complex.

“It’s exciting,” he told the Tri-City News. “This building will help dictate what’s further possible.”

Among the new 16,000 sq. ft. library’s features would be 60 study areas, shelves bolted to the floor to help withstand an earthquake, a children’s storytelling area, an ambient lighting system and nine new computers — three of which would be connected to the internet.

“We’re going to act as the gatekeepers for that,” Pulham said of the technological capability — still leading edge in 1995.

The Tri-City News has covered civic affairs, local crime, festivals, events, personalities, sports and arts in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody since 1983.
