Headlines from the past is a recurring feature looking back at stories we've covered over the past 40+ years.

2005 was a year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the heroic run across Canada to raise money for cancer research by Terry Fox.

But the Port Coquitlam high school bearing the hometown hero’s name was having trouble getting the money together to bronze a life-size sculpture of its famous alumnus.

The sculpture, designed by another Terry Fox Secondary School grad, Danielle Pentecost, was scheduled to be installed in front of the school by the spring.

Raising the $23,000 to get the clay figure bronzed, however, was proving to be a daunting challenge.

Art teacher Jacquelyn Collins said she approached businesses and applied for grants from arts groups to help pay the bill because the Terry Fox Foundation required any fundraising around the Terry Fox name be directed to cancer research.

Still, the Fox family was pleased with the sculpture and Collins said it will be a fitting legacy at the school.

“Students at this school really embrace his spirit,” she said.
