Stories from Tri-City News headlines of decades past is a recurring feature as the publication marks its 40th anniversary in 2024.
How sweet it was.
The Terry Fox Ravens defeated the North Delta Huskies 77-72 in overtime at the PNE Agrodome to win the 1992-93 title in one of the most thrilling finishes to the BC AAA boys’ high school basketball championships.
It was a result that almost didn’t happen until six-foot-eight post Dave Morgan drained a shot with just three seconds left in the fourth quarter to even the score at 67-67.
“There they are, they came back,” said Ravens coach Don Van Os amidst the bedlam of celebrating teenagers and alumni that stormed the Agrodome’s old hardwood floor after the buzzer signalled the end of the five-minute extra period.
“For alumni, this is awesome,” said co-coach Mike Hind.
Senior Bret Anderson led Fox scorers with 28 points and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
His future lay in another sport, though, as he went on to play football and basketball at Simon Fraser University then was the placekicker and slotback for the BC Lions for 13 years.
Van Os retired from teaching and coaching last year and was recently honoured by the school for his contributions to its basketball program.
