Picnickers spell out a giant marriage proposal on the field behind Parkland Elementary School in Coquitlam.

Stories from Tri-City News headlines of decades past is a recurring feature as the publication marks its 40th anniversary in 2024.

Coquitlam resident Adam Newton wanted to make sure his marriage proposal to his girlfriend, Kim Nouris, made a big impression.

So the business student arranged a picnic for about 125 family, friends and members of his church in the field at Parkland Elementary School.

Then, the budding commercial pilot took Nouris on a flight aboard a Cessna 172 out of Abbotsford International Airport.

As the young couple flew over Parkland, the picnickers spelled out “Kim, will you marry me?,” in giant letters made of newsprint. The question mark was formed by revellers sitting in lawn chairs, with a giant beach umbrella forming the dot.

Newton and Nouris flew over the school at about 1,000 feet and she said "yes."

“She was really blown away by the whole thing,” Newton’s mom, Chris, told the Tri-City News.
