Have fun 'like an East Coaster' at this Port Moody kitchen party

Kitchen parties are a Maritime tradition, says Port Moody resident Adam Faber, who moved from Nova Scotia and is known for accordion parodies.

Transplanted Maritimer Adam Faber is bringing his East Coast kitchen party to Port Moody's Kyle Centre on Jan. 27.

For the first time, Port Moody’s East Coast kitchen party will have proximity to an actual kitchen.

The gathering for impromptu musical collaboration and camaraderie is being held at the Kyle Centre on Jan. 27, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

And while the facility does have a kitchen, musicians or anyone with musical inclinations will be gathering in the dance hall to play and share traditional folk and sea songs from Canada’s east coast.

The event is being organized by transplanted Nova Scotian Adam Faber, who’s hosted previous kitchen parties at Rocky Point and Pioneer Memorial parks as well as the Port Moody Recreation Centre.

He said the kitchen gatherings are a staple of Maritime house parties where family, friends and neighbours inevitably gravitate to the kitchen where someone breaks out a guitar or squeeze box and soon everybody is joining in.

“The kitchen is where the family hangs out,” Faber said, adding the assemblies are inclusive; even if you can’t play an instrument or carry a tune, it’s fun to clap along or just enjoy the revelry.

“You’ll learn to have a bit of fun like an East Coaster.”

Registration is $2.25 and can be done through the city’s website. Songbooks will be provided.
