Fraser Health has shuttered five Tri-City businesses as part of a provincial push to target the transmission of COVID-19 at workplaces.

The closures come a week after provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said health authorities would start to disclose the names of workplaces where three or more people have COVID-19 and transmission is likely to have occurred.

The move is meant to stop the spread of COVID-19 in viral hot spots, eventually limiting community transmission.

“By using targeted worksite closures around current cases of COVID-19, we may be able to avoid or delay broader workplace closure measures, which could close entire business sectors,” notes Fraser Health on its website.

MULTIPLE INDUSTRIES HIT WITH TRANSMISSION

The businesses shuttered across Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody range from gyms to a flooring business and local restaurants — that despite a current ban on public indoor dining.

On April 12, the Coquitlam restaurants Joey Coquitlam, at 550 Lougheed Highway, and The Keg Steakhouse & Bar, at 130 - 2991 Lougheed Highway, were both issued closure notices.

On April 13, the McDonald's at 2330 Ottawa Street in Port Coquitlam was added to that list, and by April 14, the Fitness World at 220 Brew Street in Port Moody and the Port Coquitlam flooring company Western Canada Coatings were also told to shut down operations.

The closure notices, issued by either public health or WorkSafeBC, will remain in place for at least 10 days, notes Fraser Health.

The closures are among several local businesses hit with COVID-19 cases in recent days. On Monday, the Dennis' No Frills off Como Lake Avenue in Coquitlam reported three employees tested positive for COVID-19, with the employees last having worked April 1, 3 and 9, respectively.
