The first segment of the Fremont Connector - a road that will link Lougheed Highway with Dominion Avenue in Port Coquitlam - could be open as early as next month.
Once the road is completed, it will provide another north-south connection in PoCo, easing traffic on nearby routes such as Ottawa Street and Coast Meridian Road.
"If there are people in the northeast that wish to go to the Mary Hill Bypass, some of that traffic right now sort of backtracks," said Dave Currie, the city's manager of transportation. "With the new road, it will be shorter."
Con-West was required to build the road as part of its application for an industrial and residential development on the northeast portion of the property. According to a city staff report, the developer has completed the majority of the work and control of the road is ready to be handed over to the city for public use.
Con-West has built a 17-acre industrial development and work is about to get underway on a condo tower at the northeast section of the Dominion Triangle overlooking the Pitt River. The company is also required to build a 28-stall parking lot for users of the Traboulay PoCo Trail, which will provide separation between industrial and residential properties.
When the new route is opened, it will also allow for easier access to the retail developments on the site. The Fremont Connector, said the staff report, will connect motorists with new arterial routes such as Sherling Avenue and Hawkins Street.
