Fox library reopens following flooding

The Terry Fox branch of the Fraser Valley Regional Library is popping back into its own building after flooding forced the staff to set up a temporary pop-up in the lobby of the Port Coquitlam Recreation Centre.

The branch (2470 Mary Hill Road) was to reopen for business on Thursday at 1 p.m., said a FVRL news release.

Heavy rainfall caused the branch to flood Nov. 1. It was immediately closed for repairs and after that was done, testing had to be carried out to make sure there were no health risks before reopening.

Last Wednesday (Nov. 1), library staff set up a temporary pop-up across the parking lot in the rec centre’s lobby so customers could pick up items on hold or return items they had borrowed. The space also allowed the library to resume its storytime and babytime activities.

The release thanked the library’s patrons for their patience during the closure. It also said holds currently ready for pick up will be held at the library until Nov. 22. Items returned during the closure will be backdated, and no fines will be charged as a result of the closure.

During its five days in operation, the pop up library had 719 visitors, 1,005 items were returned, 665 items were checked out, and 80 reference questions answered, according to library manager Kimberley Constable.
