Four Coquitlam Cheetahs nationals bound with golden provincial performances

The Tri-Cities' track and field club won 10 gold, eight silver and three bronze at the 2022 provincial championships in Kamloops.

The Coquitlam Cheetahs are on the prowl for greatness this summer.

The local track-and-field club corralled 10 provincial titles from the 2022 BC provincial championships earlier this month.

And four of those winning athletes will soon be heading east to the national youth championships after claiming their respective events.

Delaney Self brought back the most medals from Kamloops among her Cheetah teammates, reaching the top of the podium twice in under-16 womens' 80-metre (12.10 seconds) and 300-metre hurdles (45.86 seconds),  and settling for silver in high jump (1.5 metres).

Her twin sister, Makenna, was the fastest woman under 16 years old in winning gold in the 100-metre (12.41 seconds) and 200-metre dashes (25.92 seconds) to qualify for Team BC.

Joining the Selfs includes Calib Gruninger, who rallied to win the under-18 boys' 100-metre race in a time of 10.88 seconds, but just fell short of the sprint double with a silver in the 200-metre dash (22.12 seconds).

As well, multi-event athlete Marty Bajarunas had the longest throw in under-18 boys' javelin at more than 55 metres to earn a gold medal around his neck, while also picking up a bronze in high jump (1.8 metres).

All four will compete in the 2022 Canadian Legion Track and Field Championships, Aug. 6 to 8 in Sherbrooke, Que.

Meanwhile, the Cheetahs were also led once more by veteran and 400-metre Canadian-champion Nathan George, who's flew past the field to win gold in the open men's 200-metre sprint.

George successfully defended his 200m crown from last year's provincials with a winning time of 21.29 seconds.

As well, Liepa Bajarunas racked up a gold medal in under-20 womens' javelin with a heave of the spear to nearly 37 metres.

Devon Meadows and Joshua Adehmar rounded out the gold medals for Coquitlam in the under-20 mens' 800-metre race (1:55.80) and 400-metre hurdles respectively (53.59 seconds).

Altogether, Coquitlam tallied 21 medals from the provincial meet, including 10 gold, eight silver and three bronze.
