Cardio machines, free weights and other fitness gear moved across the street last week from Coquitlam’s City Centre Aquatic Complex (CCAC) to the Innovation Centre.
The move to the Pinetree Way facility — next to the Evergreen Cultural Centre — is a result of the $5-million renovation work happening at the CCAC until October that, when finished, will offer more space for additional group fitness and spin classes, more equipment and child care.
But Judy Hamanishi, Coquitlam’s community recreation manager, told the Tri-City News that not all the fitness pieces were transferred due to lack of space at the Innovation Centre.
Still, when the temporary location launched on Monday at 6:30 a.m., “we had a line-up from the minute we opened our doors. It’s been very well-received by the public.”
Because of physical distancing protocols during the pandemic, the city is allowing only 10 patrons in every hour during the eight sessions per day; the weight room is open seven days a week, and users are asked to book a timeslot via coquitlam.ca/registration.
And if a session is full, residents can head up to the indoor fitness centre at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex — which recently extended its hours — or use the outdoor fitness gear at Town Centre Park (next to the spray park and children’s playground).
As well, this spring and summer, the Park Spark team will set up temporary pop-up fitness circuits that will rotate at Coquitlam parks.
Alternatively, residents can also work out to fitness videos through coquitlam.ca/spirit (go to the Fitness at Home section).
