Port Coquitlam families facing financial struggles can now apply for subsidies from the city to help ease the cost recreational and arts activities as well as camp programs.
The financial assistance program provides up to $200 a year for adults along with a 75 per cent discount toward the cost of city recreation programs and memberships while youth up to 18 years old can receive a total of $500 along with the discount.
Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West said the city’s financial assistance program helps remove barriers to ensure all residents can enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle.
“Programs like this help build a healthier, more connected city where every resident has the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial circumstances,” he said in a news release.
In 2024, more than 1,533 Port Coquitlam residents received over $53,000 in subsidies.
That’s almost 28 per cent more than participated in the program the previous year.
“This program is a key part of creating a city where everyone belongs,” said Coun. Paige Petriw, council’s designate for community experience, celebrations, events and inclusion.
Port Coquitlam introduced several changes to the program in 2021 including an easier screening process for applicants after participation dipped to as low as 283 people in 2020 despite recent census data that 5,000 residents of the city live in poverty.
