Early voting in SD43 byelection draws 298 Coquitlam electors

Less than 300 voters in Coquitlam cast their votes last week in the byelection to replace a Coquitlam trustee. General voting day is on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025.

A total of 298 Coquitlam residents made their way to polling stations last week to cast their ballots early in the school byelection.

The City of Coquitlam, which is running the byelection on behalf of School District 43 (SD43), said 139 electors voted at Centennial Pavilion on Feb. 12 while 159 voters made their mark at Pinetree Community Centre on Feb. 15.

The byelection is being held to replace Coquitlam trustee Jennifer Blatherwick, who was elected as the MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville last October.

General voting day is on Saturday, Feb. 22, with polls open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at these locations:

There are five candidates running for the Coquitlam seat. They are (in alphabetical order) and their cities of residences:

    • Coquitlam

    • Coquitlam

    • Port Moody

To participate in the byelection, voters must be:

  • 18 years old or older on or before Feb. 22, 2025
  • a Canadian citizen
  • a B.C. resident for at least six months
  • a Coquitlam resident
  • not disqualified from voting

To vote, you need to bring at least two documents that show your photo and place of residence; at least one card needs to have your signature. Here are some examples of ID to bring to the polling station:

  • BC Care Card
  • BC Driver's Licence
  • BC Identification Card issued by ICBC
  • BC Services Card
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Credit Card or Debit Card
  • Property Tax Notice issued by the City of Coquitlam
  • Social Insurance Card
  • Secure Certificate of Indian Status (Status Card)
  • Utility Bill (Phone, Hydro, Gas, etc.)
  • Valid Passport
  • Vehicle insurance documents issued by ICBC
  • Ministry of Social Development and Economic Security Request for Continued Assistance Form SDES8

The City of Coquitlam has budgeted $350,000 to run the byelection with 50 workers under Chief Election Officer Kerri Wells; SD43 will pay the municipality back for its costs.
