Photos: Early morning fire in Coquitlam leaves 100 residents homeless

A fire broke out at an apartment block in Austin Heights in Coquitlam overnight March 7, 2024.

More than 100 Coquitlam residents are at a city emergency social services reception centre this morning, March 7, after a fire broke out at their apartment building overnight.

The centre is the emergency response hub for the displaced residents, who are now scrambling to find accommodation following the blaze that started at around 2 a.m. at Gatensbury Street and Ridgeway Avenue.

Firefighters from Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and Burnaby were called in to assist with dousing the flames.

Two residents were rescued from their balcony and treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire at the five-storey building has not been confirmed. 

Fire crews remain on scene to put on the hot spots in and around the 22 affected units.
