A second Coquitlam resident is in the race for the school board seat left vacant last fall.

Rosey Manhas, the current president of the District Parents Advisory Councils (DPAC), announced today, Jan. 6, she’s running in the Feb. 22 trustee byelection.

The vote is to replace the post previously held on the School District 43 (SD43) board of education by Jennifer Blatherwick, who is now the NDP MLA for Coquitlam–Maillardville.

A mother of two, healthcare professional and a former PAC chairperson at Smiling Creek Elementary, Manhas said she vows to expand classroom spaces and make sure parents feel supported, if elected.

“Students and families deserve to feel safe, supported and valued within our public education system,” Manhas said in a news release.

“After engaging in numerous conversations with families about school safety, I am determined to do everything I can to address these concerns and create a better experience for everyone.”

As a trustee, Manhas said she plans to foster an inclusive community and make sure parents are part of the decisions about their children’s education.

Manhas’ campaign is being backed by Blatherwick.

“She is hard-working, knowledgeable and dedicated to improving the school system,” Blatherwick said in the same statement.

“She has two kids in the school system and understands firsthand the concerns of parents. Her experience will make her an effective voice for families.”

As well, Manhas’ bid is being endorsed by DPAC vice president Jamie Manchester and SD43 trustee Carol Brodie, who is also the executive director of the Coquitlam Foundation.

Also seeking the SD43 seat is Candace Knoll, a union leader, past Montessori PAC parent at Harbour View Elementary and a King Charles III Coronation Medal recipient.
