Litterbugs watch out: Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West doesn’t think too kindly of you.
Sunday, the mayor provided a stinging rebuke on Twitter and Facebook for those who leave garbage behind after visiting a city park.
“The amount of garbage and waste we are finding is disgusting. Have some pride in our city and take some responsibility: if you bring it in, take it out,” said West in his post.
The Tri-City News visited Lions Park and saw people disposing of trash properly in one of the many bear-resistant bins. But there were a few empty bottles and cans placed next to garbage cans, likely for collectors to pick up for deposit.
However, West made the commentary after speaking with staff on how the city is dealing with the heatwave.
After a morning briefing with city staff, there are 3 important issues I need to raise with our community:

1) Port Coquitlam is blessed with unrivalled access to the outdoors and many people are turning to our parks, and especially the Coquitlam River, to stay cool.
He also had strong words for those who are leaving their pet in a hot car.
“There is no excuse for leaving a dog (or any living thing for that matter) in a vehicle.,” he stated, noting that bylaw and police have been responding to calls about dogs in hot cars.
“Your windows will be broken,” West said.
With temperatures soaring to 40C, Port Coquitlam bylaw officers are out speaking to those without shelter to give them water and connect them with local services.
Terry Fox Library is open for vulnerable people to take refuge in the extreme heat, according to West.
As well, water is available at seven PoCo parks: Leigh Square, Gates, Lions, McLean, Castle, Sun Valley and Robert Hope.
