An advocacy group for arts, culture and entertainment in Port Coquitlam is pitching the idea of hosting an annual festival.
On Tuesday, Sept. 26, Patrick McCarthy of the PoCo Arts Council — formerly the Friends of Leigh Square — asked the city's committee of council to consider granting $35,000 to the non-profit group for the premiere arts celebration.
McCarthy said the event would see performances and artist demonstrations in both the northern and southern sides of the city, as well as a gala to honour artists and artisans who have made a difference in the community.
The proposed gala at the Terry Fox Theatre would be similar in style to the PoCo Sport Alliance's awards night that recognizes and pays tribute to local athletes.
McCarthy said the fest would be volunteer driven, and the PoCo Arts Council would partner with art-focus groups, schools and PoCo businesses.
Coun. Paige Petriw, a special events planner, thanked McCarthy for bringing the concept forward as it ties in with the current Leigh Square refresh.
"This is very exciting," Coun. Darrell Penner added, noting he saw the economic benefits to arts and culture during a recent trip to Quebec City.
Still, Coun. Steve Darling said that while he's in favour of more artistic outreach, especially for teens, "I'm not 100 per cent sold on the gala."
He suggested PoCo Arts Council stick with activities and workshops such as its recent DJ pop-up at a skateboard park and the Star Wars painting night on May 4 at a local pub.
The group's funding request will go before city council when it deliberates the 2024 budget this winter.
Meanwhile, McCarthy said the next Battle of the Artists will take place on Oct. 13. For details, you can visit the PoCo Arts Council's website or social media channels.
