One Port Coquitlam middle school has been flagged for COVID-19 exposures across a six-day period while another has reported a second set of exposure events — the first school in School District 43 to do so.
Fraser Health is reporting exposures at Kwayhquitlum middle school from Oct. 13 to 16 and again on Oct. 19 and 20. Pitt River middle school, which had reported exposures on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, has now been flagged for additional exposures on Oct. 15 and 16.
The two new sets of exposure events mean 12 schools have reported a case of COVID-19 in School District 43 to date.
There are currently six active exposures at Tri-City schools, including at Banting middle school, Kwayhquitlum middle, Pitt River middle, Glen elementary, as well as Centennial, Heritage Woods and Port Moody secondaries.
To date, roughly 17% of SD43 schools and 36% of high schools have been hit by a COVID-19 exposure event.
According to Fraser Health, a school “exposure” indicates a single person with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection attended school during their infectious period. A school “cluster,” on the other hand, indicates possible school-based transmission with two or more lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 attending school while infectious. Finally, an “outbreak” at a school means “multiple individuals with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection” and that “transmission is likely widespread.”
