The MP for Coquitlam–Port Coquitlam is now leading the country’s standing committee on national security and public safety.
Last Thursday (Sept. 29), Liberal MP Ron McKinnon was elected as committee chair to replace Winnipeg South Centre MP Jim Carr, who resigned.
“I am deeply honoured to be elected as chair of the standing committee on national security and public safety,” McKinnon told the Tri-City News last week.
“I would like to thank my colleagues from all parties for putting your trust in me. I would like to thank the Hon. Jim Carr for serving dutifully as our chair, and for his professionalism and integrity.”
According to the federal government website, the committee “reviews legislation policies, programs and expenditure plans of government departments and agencies responsible for public safety and national security, policing and law enforcement, corrections and conditional release of federal offenders, emergency management, crime prevention and the protection of Canada's borders.”
Recently, the committee has considered and heard testimony about:
- Canada’s support for Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership as a result of the Russian invasion on Ukraine
- Canada’s security posture in relation to Russia
- the 2022 mass murders in Saskatchewan
- allegations of political interference in the 2020 Nova Scotia mass murder investigation
Besides McKinnon, the committee is made up of MPs Carr; Paul Chiang (Markham–Unionville); Pam Damoff (Oakville North–Burlington); Taleeb Noormohamed (Vancouver Granville); Peter Schiefke (Vaudreuil–Soulanges); Raquel Dancho (Kildonan–St. Paul); Dane Lloyd (Sturgeon River–Parkland); Doug Shipley (Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte); Tako Van Popta (Langley–Aldergrove); Kristina Michaud (Avignon–La Mitis-Matane-Matapédia); and Alistair MacGregor (Cowichan–Malahat–Langford).
