Jysk at Sunwood Square mall in Coquitlam is closing in May.

Coquitlam is losing a home goods retailer close to the city's town centre.

Jysk is closing its Sunwood Square location (910-3025 Lougheed Hwy.) in May after 25 years.

Signs showing the closing sale have been posted, announcing savings up to 60 per cent off.

Jysk Canada CEO Ludvik G. Kristjansson confirmed the Denmark store's closure in an email to the Tri-City News.

"We are closing this location in May as our lease is coming to an end after 25 successful years and the owner has other ideas for the space."

However, he noted that shoppers can still purchase their Scandinavian design inspired goods at the United Boulevard location, which remains open on King Edward Street.

"We will continue to serve our customers from the United Boulevard location," stated Kristjansson.

When it opened in 2017, the second Coquitlam Jysk store was touted as the 62nd Canadian location and, at 28,000 sq. ft., was described as a large retail outlet offering a wide variety of household goods such as mattresses, furniture and interior décor.

The United Boulevard store also stocks a large collection of patio furniture and accessories.

The Tri-City News has reached out to the landlord BentallGreenOak (Canada) Limited Partnership for more information on the owner's future plans for the space, but has yet to hear back as of this publication (March 7).

Jysk is the largest Danish retailer operating internationally with over 3,200 stores and online shopping in 48 countries, according to its website.
