Have a say on Coquitlam's Climate Action Plan.

Coquitlam is calling on local residents to share their thoughts on shaping the city's Climate Action Plan.

From now until late November, the municipality's environment team is taking feedback on measures of reducing carbon pollution to support Coquitlam's work "towards a strong and resilient future," a news release stated.

The goal is to create a plan that will provide a flexible, achievable, and balanced approach for the City to achieve its 2030 climate targets.

To get involved, community members can take a community survey on the website or bounce some ideas off the city's environment team at a number of pop-up events throughout the community (dates, times and locations will be listed on the project page).

Residents can also learn about the plan from two online sessions:

The plan is expected to be finalized in 2024 after evaluating public input alongside other research, technical analysis, budget, other city plans and strategies.

The new targets, as outlined in the 2022 Environmental Sustainability Plan, is to reduce carbon pollution (greenhouse gas emissions) across the community and city operations, including:

  • A 45 per cent reduction in carbon pollution over 2007 levels by 2030
  • Carbon neutrality by 2050

The release also stated, while this plan lays out a pathway towards 2050, it will mostly focus on the next 10 years and will be updated as new technology and information emerges.
