A communications company will pay the city of Coquitlam $20,000 a year to place a wireless system on a new light pole at Town Centre Park.
On Monday, council unanimously approved the partnership with Rogers to replace a lighting mast in Percy Perry Stadium and add a wireless facility to it.
The 35 m high mast will be located near the bleachers and the field house/concession stand; it will stand 5 m taller than the pole it's replacing and be 50% wider at the base.
As well, Rogers will pay the city an additional $12,000 a year to lease its QNet fibre optic cables (QNet is wholly owned corporation of the municipality).
Raul Allueva, Coquitlam's acting general manager of parks, told council the lighting for the sports field won't be affected. The technology will expand the city's free public WiFi network, said IT manager Rick Adams.
