Coquitlam RCMP will be watching for bad drivers this month as they roll out a high-risk driving enforcement campaign.
"High-risk driving creates undue risk and endangers the safety of other road users," said Sgt. Dave Fee of the Coquitlam RCMP's traffic services section in a release. "Many driving behaviours, like tailgating, may seem harmless but the truth is they increase your risk of collision at intersections - potentially injuring or killing yourself and others."
Police say high-risk driving is one of the leading contributors in about two-thirds of all traffic fatalities.
Throughout May, officers will be watching for drivers who are distracted, run yellow or red lights, or speed excessively.
To keep safe on the road, follow these tips from the RCMP:
Slow down as you approach intersections and remember that a yellow light means to stop if you can do so safely.
Be particularly careful when making a left turn and always yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic; always use your turn signal.
Leave enough space between your car and the one in front of you so you have time to react to the unexpected.
Shoulder check for cyclists before turning right or pulling away from a curb, and watch for oncoming cyclists before turning left.
Leave early and give yourself extra time in case of delays.
With warmer weather, be alert for motorcyclists, especially when turning left; motorcyclists are hard to see and it can be difficult to judge their speed and intentions, so the safest thing to do is yield the right-of-way.
