The Coquitlam RCMP is hoping to be a Grinch this Christmas.
At least to prospective shoplifters.
The detachment has launched its “Grinch Watch” program to help discourage thieves during the busy holiday shopping season. Its increasing proactive patrols by officers at retail hotspots and other high-risk locations like parking lots.
“December is a time for celebration,” said Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Karrie Ellis in a news release.
“Unfortunately, it also brings an uptick in retail theft including vehicle break-ins as criminals take advantage of the holiday rush.”

Ellis said officers and volunteers will have a visible presence and work closely with local businesses to identify and deal with criminal activity.
“If you’re thinking about stealing, think again,” said Ellis. “We’ll be watching.”
In addition to increased patrols, the detachment is also boosting its community outreach to remind shoppers and retailers to stay vigilant and report suspicious behaviour to police. It also has tips for home owners and motorists to stay safe.
The goal, the release stated, is to reduce theft and prevent crime so the only thing residents have to worry about in December is picking the perfect gift.
In November, the detachment's acting officer-in-charge, Insp. Aaron Lloyd, told Coquitlam council shoplifting in the city surged from May through August.
He said the 428 reported incidents were a significant contributor to an overall 14 per cent increase in property crimes during the same time period.
To report suspicious activity, you can call Coquitlam RCMP’s non-emergency line at 604-945-1550, or 911 if it is an emergency.
