Coquitlam RCMP continue to investigate after a hazardous materials team dismantled a drug lab Tuesday at a home on Westwood Street.
Police were called after several neighbours reporting that they smelled a strong scent of acetone coming from a home in the area.
The RCMP's Clandestine Lab Enforcement and Response Team was called in along with Coquitlam Fire/Rescue's hazmat team.
"We are dealing with very toxic chemicals," Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said Wednesday. "We are in the process of cleaning it up. We are going to be there for a while."
It was too early to say what charges might be laid against a man that was taken into custody at the house.
Chung also would not say whether the suspect was known to police and could not confirm whether a BMW witnesses said was towed from the home was seized by police.
Drug labs are particularly dangerous not only for the occupants of the home but those living or working nearby, Chung said.
"Thankfully, we don't hear too much about [clandestine] labs in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam," he said. "It is a danger to oneself and the neighbourhood. It deals with all kinds of explosive chemicals."
