Go green to get green.

A B.C. clean energy program is giving eligible Port Moody property owners looking to reduce their carbon footprint a chance to update their heat pumps, electrical and water services — all while earning a decent deal.

Today (April 27), the city unveiled a rebate top-up initiative that could see up to $1,200 go back in the pockets of homeowners that choose to make the switch and file invoices within six months.

In conjunction with the CleanBC Better Homes program, the rebates include:

  • $500 = electric service upgrades
  • $350 = heat pumps
  • $350 = heat pump water heaters

In a statement, Port Moody staff explain current heating systems are emitting more fossil fuels, adding heat pumps can help reduce a home's emissions by up to 97 per cent.

And it can save some shekels on homeowners' bills.

"A heat pump is an efficient heating and cooling system that uses electricity to move heat from one place to another," a city release said, noting it can also eliminate air pollutants, dust, pollen and other allergens.

"In the winter, a heat pump transfers heat from the outside air to the indoors through a cycle of compression and expansion of a refrigerant. In the summer, it operates in reverse and transfers heat from inside your home to the outdoors, like an air conditioner."

The Port Moody top-ups will be available on the first-come, first-served basis, the city said, as there's a limited number of available funds.

A homeowner's eligibility is assessed by CleanBC when they submit an application for the rebates.
