WorkSafeBC has fined a Burnaby building company more than $32,000 for "multiple safety deficiencies" at a Coquitlam development.

Allaire Construction Inc. is the prime contractor at "Florin" at 600 Rochester Ave., a development that includes plans for a mix of condos, townhouses and single-family homes.

WorkSafe inspected the site on Aug. 13, when it consisted of seven lowrise buildings with a shared two-level concrete underground parkade at various stages of construction, according to an inspection report obtained by the Burnaby NOW.

The inspector observed workers on balcony decks without guardrails; glass windows and doors leaning on the patios without being secured; missing handrails; an unsecured compressed-gas cylinder; and a temporary worker in "the middle of the road" controlling traffic without traffic control signs or devices, according to the report.

"The employer, as prime contractor at the work site, had not effectively co-ordinated health and safety nor implemented an effective system to ensure compliance with the (occupational health and safety) provisions and regulations," stated the report.

WorkSafe ordered Allaire to fix the issues and fined the company $32,145.67 at the end of October, saying they were "repeated and high-risk violations."

Allaire, based at 9600 Cameron St. in Burnaby, has asked for the penalty to be reviewed.
