If you think you're seeing a lot of teal in the Tri-Cities Monday night, don't worry, you haven't time travelled back to the 1990s.
City halls in Port Moody and Port Coquitlam, as well as lighting features around Lafarge Lake and along Pinetree Way in Coquitlam, will be among dozens of landmarks around Metro Vancouver that will be aglow for Big Brothers and Big Sisters on Sept. 18.
Other prominent sites include the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, BC Place, the sails at Canada Place and the Burrard Bridge, as well as Science World, which will rejoin the light-up party after being left in the dark last year because of maintenance.
It's the first year the event has spread beyond Vancouver.
In a news release, the organization said it hopes the mass lighting will raise awareness of Brig Brothers and Big Sisters programs and perhaps spark interest from new volunteers to mentor more than 700 youth in the Tri-Cities, Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster, Delta, White Rock and North Shore.
"There are hundreds of children who could greatly benefit from a mentor, if they had one," said Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver (BBGV) spokesperson Rosa Higgins.
She added the need has become particularly acute since the pandemic; prior to 2020 it helped more than 1,000 children annually.
