Shredding is the safest way to get rid of sensitive documents and the Better Business Bureau is poised to help people avoid identity theft.
The organization is planning a document shred event March 19 at the east Vancouver Rona store from noon to 3 p.m. The document shred is being held to mark Fraud Prevention Month and people are encouraged to bring along a donation to the Vancouver Food Bank with their documents.
"Shredding personal information is an important first step in identity theft protection," says Lynda Pasacreta, BBB president and CEO. "Many identity theft cases occur after personal information has been lost or stolen, so you have to be very careful about how your information is handled and disposed of - it could be costly if it gets into the wrong hands."
Silver Bullet Shredding will provide free professional shredding of any personal documents, such as tax returns and bank statements.
Rona is located at 2727 East 12th Ave., Vancouver, B.C. (outdoor parking lot)
