Applications are open for a popular Coquitlam initiative that seeks to train future firefighters and expand recruitment at the same time.
The 2023 junior firefighter program invites local students in grades 11 and 12, who are considering a career in the field, to take part in ground drills, high-angle rescue and basic first aid.
The firefighter training is a standard eight-week program condensed into eight days for about 12 participants.
It's also a partnership between School District 43 (SD43) and Coquitlam Fire Rescue, and is scheduled during spring break from March 10 to 17.
Deputy fire chief Scott Young said, including 2022's class, 46 teens have gone through the program at Fire Station 1 since its inception in 2019.
"The program goals are to provide students the opportunity to learn experientially about becoming a firefighter," Young added in a news release, noting successful applicants will also experience the "community goodwill, pride, excitement and camaraderie that come with the job."
Notable training exercises include the use of fire extinguishers, harnessing hose and nozzle skills, vehicle and equipment familiarization, auto extrication and a public service component.
Specific criteria must be met in order to participate in the junior firefighter academy.
A fitness test will take place to see if candidates meet physical standards of the hands-on program. They must also take part in an interview and submit an in-depth application form for the academic portion.
The application deadline is Dec. 2.
