Another quarter, another payout for Coquitlam.
Last week, the city collected $1.8 million from the provincial government as part of its cut as host municipality to the Boulevard Casino.
The amount is about the same as this quarter last year, said Sheena MacLeod, Coquitlam's manager of financial services, but down slightly from the previous two quarters.
Since the casino opened in 2002 on United Boulevard, Coquitlam has collected more than $85 million as part of its 10% cut, most of which is spent on major capital projects; the city also puts 12.5% into a community fund for local non-profit groups.
Last month, city council handed out more than $400,000 to non-profit community and sporting organizations in annual Spirit and Active grants.
Also in September, a bid by Port Coquitlam city council to have the provincial government better distribute gaming funds so communities surrounding a casino also get a piece of the pie was voted down at the Union of BC Municipalities convention in Victoria.
