One Tri-City sub-region has climbed to another important plateau in the fight against COVID-19.
The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) is reporting southwest Coquitlam with a 90 per cent vaccination rate in terms of eligible residents 12 years and older who've received at least one dose against the virus.
The area surpasses Port Moody-Anmore-Belcarra in that category, but that neighbourhood is leading the charge on double-vaccinations at an 85 per cent rate.
Collectively, the Tri-Cities hold an 83.2 per cent rate for two doses in eligible shoulders and because of that, it appears average positivity (2.6) and case rates (five) for the virus are also back on the week-to-week decline.
"Case rates" represent new cases per 100,000 people by local health area and community health service area.
The new data collected by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) between Sept. 13 and 19 is broken down as follows:
North Coquitlam
- Case rate: Four
- Two per cent positivity rate
- 88 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with at least one dose
- 83 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with a second dose
Southwest Coquitlam
- Case rate: Seven
- Three per cent positivity rate
- 90 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with at least one dose
- 84 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with a second dose
Southeast Coquitlam
- Case rate: One
- Two per cent positivity rate
- 88 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with at least one dose
- 82 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with a second dose
Port Coquitlam
- Case rate: Seven
- Three per cent positivity rate
- 88 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with at least one dose
- 82 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with a second dose
Port Moody-Anmore-Belcarra
- Case rate: Six
- Three per cent positivity rate
- 89 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with at least one dose
- 85 per cent of 12+ population vaccinated with a second dose
Despite the promising numbers, the Delta variant remains a big risk in the Tri-Cities and across the province.
The number of those in B.C. hospitals' intensive care units (ICUs) with COVID-19 is once again higher than at any time in the past four months, with 157 people fighting for their lives in those wards.

The number of COVID-19 patients in any hospital ward in B.C. fell by eight overnight, to 324.
Another 10 people died from COVID-19 in the past day in B.C., raising the province's pandemic death toll to 1,910.
Health officials continue to detect high numbers of new infections. In the past 24 hours, 759 new individuals were confirmed to be infected.
Additionally, of the 353 hospitalizations in the two weeks ended Sept. 19, there were:
- 279 not vaccinated (79 per cent)
- 20 partially vaccinated (5.7 per cent)
- 54 fully vaccinated (15.3 per cent)
The 4,367 cases in the week ended Sept. 19 included:
- 2,982 unvaccinated (68.3 per cent)
- 340 partially vaccinated (7.8 per cent)
- 1,045 fully vaccinated (23.9 per cent)
