Tri-City horticulturists with a keen eye have noticed that a new gardening store is coming to town.
Burnaby-based Gardenworks has staked claim to a building near Falcon Drive in Coquitlam.
A sharp-eyed member of the Tri-Cities Gardeners group on Facebook noticed a sign stating Future Home of Gardenworks on a building located at 2595 Barnet Hwy. (Highway 7A), in the parking lot of the Eagle Ridge GM dealership.
The post set off a flurry of comments, including a concern from one gardener that they would be spending a lot of money at the store.
The Tri-City News has reached out to the company for more details. Its website states it has eight locations across B.C. with a new store "coming soon" to Coquitlam.
The introduction of Gardenworks to the Tri-Cities comes as a COVID-19 pandemic-fuelled interest in gardening has taken hold in the province.
Last year, Urban Roots Garden Markets set up a number of pop-up garden nurseries in the Lower Mainland, including one in Port Moody and one in Coquitlam.
The new garden-oriented shops come after the closure of Art Knapp in 2020 — a longtime business in Port Coquitlam formerly owned by Wim Vander Zalm; his wife, Rose, who subsequently opened a gardening lifestyle shop called Hampton Home Living, in the Dominion Triangle.
There have been other gardening stores in Port Moody over the years.
At one point, Vander Zalm operated a garden store in the city.
