A weekend cold snap in January 2024 freezed Coquitlam's Como Lake enough to allow games of shinny.

For the next two weeks, until Dec. 31, the Tri-City News looks back on some of our favourite photos from 2024.

Each day, we are posting one image along with commentary about what it took to get that photo and the story it conveys.

It’s not often the weather gets cold enough for local ponds and lakes to freeze over for outdoor skating.

So when a cold snap last January froze over Como Lake in Coquitlam, I used some downtime during a day off to venture up to see if people were taking advantage.

Of course, the city had issued the requisite warnings and posted signs around the lake to discourage people from skating on the ice, but never underestimate the indominatable spirit of Canadians looking to revel in winter.

Me?

I stayed on shore to shoot the games of shinny; I wasn’t taking any chances.

Plus, I didn't bring my skates.
