The honour guard salutes as retiring Port Coquitlam fire chief Robert Kribbs leaves Fire Hall #1 for the last time.

For two weeks, until Dec. 31, the Tri-City News looks back on some of our favourite photos from 2024.

Each day, we are posting one image along with commentary about what it took to get that photo and the story it conveys.

Firefighters are the backbone of a communities emergency services.

They’re there when they’re needed in difficult and challenging situations and they go above and beyond to help even those who don’t require them immediately.

Bringing them all together to honour the retirement of one of their leaders is at once a solemn and celebratory occurrence that comes with its own unique rituals.

The handover ceremony, as its called when a chief retires and turns management of the department over to his successor, isn’t just an opportunity for firefighters to celebrate one of their own, it also shows the community it’s in good hands.
