The 1st Port Coquitlam Scouts have done it again.

Last week, the group snagged the top prize for its entry in the 12th annual Christmas Tree Festival, a fundraiser for PoCo Heritage that’s organized by the Downtown Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association (BIA).

Titled "Fire’s Burning," the Scouts’ tree was decorated with yellow and orange tissue paper with a toy fire engine at its base. It is located inside the Port Coquitlam Community Centre, close to the Terry Fox Library entrance.

The Scouts, who also claimed first place last year for their beaver-cut tree, took the 2024 trophy based on the number of contest votes from the public — via a QR code — between Nov. 30 and Dec. 20.

The tree with the second highest vote count was from Community Ventures BC while third spot went to Aspira Retirement Living’s Mayfair Terrace; the latter won second place last year.

A total of 37 trees went up for the competition, which is designed to raise money for PoCo Heritage’s operations as well as spread Christmas spirit and community joy.

The trees not yet dismantled can be seen at:

  • Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave.)
  • Terry Fox Library (2150 Wilson Ave.)
  • Port Coquitlam City Hall (2580 Shaughnessy St.)
  • Leigh Square (next to city hall)
  • PoCo Heritage Museum (150-2248 McAllister Ave.)
  • Hyde Creek Recreation Centre (1379 Laurier Ave.)

The other 2024 tree themes included the Grinch, Captain Underpants, social service outreach and sports.

As well, Coun. Dean Washington sponsored a holiday tree in the Michael Wright Art Gallery at Leigh Square and Coun. Nancy McCurrach returned with her memorial tree, also in the gallery.
