Before Diane Warren formed Fleetwood Magic, she scoured the internet to find video clips of Fleetwood Mac tribute bands.
She wanted to see what songs they played and how they performed to match the original members' movements on stage.
Some had the music down pat, but not the costumes.
Others decked themselves out, but their sound wasn't quite right.
"It basically came down to five or six tribute acts — in the whole world — that were good," she told the Tri-City News with a laugh.
"My aim was to get as close to the records and the dress as we could. I wanted the personalities, too, to give the full experience."
Last November, Warren, who portrays the boho-chic lead singer Stevie Nicks, brought her newly formed Fleetwood Magic to Port Moody.
It sold out weeks in advance, and she likely could have sold out another.
Next month, Warren and her band will remount their show at the Inlet Theatre to play some of Fleetwood Mac's hit tunes from their White Album, Rumours, Mirage, Tusk, Tango in the Night and Then Play On albums.
Warren is looking forward to coming back.
"We've got a lot of shows under our belt now," Warren told the Tri-City News today (Aug. 29).
"We're playing better and we're more confident. It’s going to be a polished show."
Warren has three Tri-Cities residents in the band to perform such classic songs as "Rhiannon," "Dreams" and "The Chain," among others:
- Mike Luno (Lindsay Buckingham)
- Layla Vaugeois (Christine McVie)
- Jeff Garrett (keyboards)
Vaugeois and drummer Curtis Michael Leippi (Mick Fleetwood) are new to the musical ensemble, and Dave Kalancha plays John McVie.
Warren, a North Vancouver resident who also sings for the cover band Cruise Control and a Guns N' Roses tribute act and does acoustic solo work, has already booked 10 dates for Fleetwood Magic next year.
The post–pandemic crowds "are going out in droves. People are coming to concerts and having a good time," she said.
"We are very excited to be coming to Port Moody."
Tickets for Fleetwood Magic on Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Port Moody's Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.) are via Eventbrite.ca. The band members will host a meet-and-greet in the lobby after their performance. A concession is available; however, alcohol will not be served.
