In The Fugitives' video for My, My that was filmed last month in Toronto, a man is in a bathtub splashing water on a spinning piece of fabric suspended above him.
The solemn work is an emotional performance piece rather than a narrative, said Adrian Glynn - one half of the Vancouver-based folk music group that will perform in Coquitlam on Friday.
The song represents pain and frustration after losing someone special, Glynn said, and it's the first single to come from the band's album, Everything Will Happen, due to be released on Oct. 22.
"We had an EP out this summer called Bigger than Luck and its single was very upbeat," Glynn said in an interview from Whistler last week. "We thought it would be a cool change of pace to have a deeper song out there for the next one.... We try not to be known as a one-note band."
Still, not all of the tracks on Everything Will Happen are dark. The second single, Wilderness Years, has a more uplifting tone, he said.
Their new album will be available at their show at the Evergreen Cultural Centre, which launches a 21-date tour across Canada for The Fugitives.
Evergreen is a stage Glynn will return to next March when he appears in the Arts Club Theatre on Tour production of Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen.
Glynn, who has a bachelor's degree in theatre from UBC, said when Chelsea Hotel ran last year at the Firehall, it was the first show he had appeared in for eight years. "It's pretty much impossible to do a music career and a theatre career full time," he said, "so I kind of gave up theatre. I still do T.V. on the side but music is definitely the main thing now."
The Fugitives will play Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) on Friday, Oct. 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30/$25/$15 through the box office at 604-927-6555 or online at evergreenculturalcentre.ca. Meanwhile, Brendan McLeod and Adrian Glynn will lead a songwriting workshop before the concert from 4 to 6 p.m. Registration is $52 for adults and $26 for students. Tickets to the show are $15 if purchased with the workshop.
