Abevy of activities are happening in the Tri-Cities this weekend for Canada's third annual Culture Days.
Getup close with artists, creators, historians, architects, curators and designers during the Sept. 28 to 30 celebration. Here's what's going on - for free - in this region:
FRIDAY
Bring your babe for stories, songs and a puppet show at the Terry Fox Library (2470 Mary Hill Rd., Port Coquitlam) for Exploring Music and Colours, which runs 10:15 to 10:40 a.m.
Take a tour of the Port Moody Arts Centre (2425 St. Johns St.) to check out its current exhibits byRosie James (Crowd Cloud: Drawings in Space); Shari Pratt (portraits inspired by social media photos); Amang Mardokhy (Returning to Nature); and Robi Smith (Cabinet of Curiosity series). Smith's display is part of the inauguralA View From the Water's Edge, an inauguralpartnership between PMAC, the Evergreen Cultural Centre and Leigh Square Community Arts Village.
Juno nominee singer-songwriter Hannah Georgas will rock the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.) for the 15th annual Port Moody Festival of the Arts, at 8 p.m.The concert also features alternative country-rockers Dustin Bentall and Kendel Carson.Tickets at $25/$20 can be bought at www.pomoartsfestival.ca.
SATURDAY
Grab a history nugget at Terry Fox Library (2470 Mary Hill Rd., Port Coquitlam) as John Mitchell shares stories and photos of the Cariboo gold rush and Barkerville, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Leigh Squre (beside Port Coquitlam city hall) will turn into an art market with live music, art and demos from 1 to 4 p.m. Artists Colin James Craig, Skai Fowler, Heidi Lambert, Ranjan Sen and Gerry Thompson will launch their show, part of theA View From the Water's Edge series.Meanwhile, a handful of vendors will sell their wares such as handmade leather goods, pottery, children's books, organic bath and skin products, and jewellery. A button-making workshop, children's storytelling and drum session for newbies will also be on the go. And the sounds from indie rockers Community Trees, ethnic musician Ivan Dimitrov, cellist Angela Hwang and Tambura Rosa will entertain the crowd.
Have a laugh at Hats Off Comedy Night at the Port Moody Legion 119 (2513 Clarke St.), which runs as part ofthe 15th annual Port Moody Festival of the Arts. Tickets at $25/$20 are through www.pomoartsfestival.ca.
SUNDAY
Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way) has a lot on its plate from 2:30 to 8 p.m. A classical Chinese dance and music workshop will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Studio B and, at 3 p.m., there will bea free concert with pianist Sarah Hagen and soprano Megan Skidmore. At 5:30 p.m., the Coquitlam centre will unveil Axis Mundi by painter Robert Young and will launch a new exhibit bySylvie Roussel-Janssens- titled How Deep Is Your Lake - in the lobby; her display is part of the A View From the Water's Edge series. As well, the art gallery will be open to showcase its current exhibit by Elizabeth Russell, called Exchanges. Music will be provided by the Leo Bae Jazz Ensemble and refreshments will be served.
Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.) hosts its September Family Day from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. with drop-in workshops for all ages. Enjoy the photography exhibit by Artists in our Midst alumni and media by the Maillardville facility's teachers and staff. As well, at 1:30 p.m., PdA staff will unveil the centre's 40th anniversary banners by artist Joy Kirkwood, who will be on hand to discuss her community-participation project. Port Moody Public Library (100 Newport Dr.) will see acclaimed storyteller Abegael Fisher-Lang spin tales in the Fireside Reading Room from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. as part of the Port Moody Festival of the Arts. While at city hall, check out the Coquitlam Weavers' Guild display.
