Wish you were home for the holidays? At least you can keep up with the news as Port Moody Public Library offers free eNewspapers in full colour through its Press Display service. There are 2,200 newspapers from 97 countries in 54 languages included in this one-stop electronic shop. All you need is your library card and a computer. Go to www.library.portmoody.ca and select Digital content, eNewspapers, Press Display; enter your library card number and PIN - then catch up on the news in your hometown. Don't have a computer? Drop by and use one at the library.
Ah, quiet: You can share some down time with your children at Port Moody library over Christmas. Bring your children into PMPL over the holidays and enjoy a festive atmosphere and great services. PMPL has a fabulous collection of children's materials, two computer stations containing a variety of educational games and a fun set of activity panels for younger kids. These 10 interactive learning panels provide imaginative hands-on learning for young children - little fingers can't seem to resist turning the Spin-A-Story panel, "finger painting" on the heat-sensitive blackboard, spelling with the magnetic letter board or manipulating an interactive song panel honing alphabet knowledge and fine motor skills as they play.
Calling Port Moody teen poets: Submit your two best original poems about Port Moody's past and become a part of the city's centennial celebrations. The Centennial Youth Poet Laureate will help Port Moody make the most of its 100th birthday through poetry readings, public appearances and participation in arts events. As well as leadership and civic engagement opportunities, the Youth Poet Laureate will win a $500 prize and have his/her poem included in a centennial time capsule. All contest entrants will have their poems published in the School District 43 Journal of Writing and a runner-up will be awarded a $250 prize. The contest is open to Moody residents aged 13 to 18 years old. Applications are online at library.portmoody.ca/youthpoet and submissions will be accepted until Jan. 31, 2013.
