FAIRY TALE?

Centennial secondary's musical theatre class tackles a fairy tale with some real-world twists in Into the Woods, tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. (570 Poirier St., Coquitlam). The Steven Sondheim musical mixes several fairy tale plots and characters, with a not-so-happily-ever-after ending. Tickets are $15/$12 at the door.

FILM NIGHT

The Port Moody Film Society features a drama/comedy that kicks off with the death of a Romanian immigrant in Israel in The Human Resources Manager (Hebrew/subtitles). When a reporter links the woman's death to her former employer, the company's HR manager gets involved with mixed results. SPIRIT WEEK

Port Coquitlam's centennial Spirit Week starts with a family-friendly event at the Royal Bank at Fremont Village (871 Village Dr.) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a free hockey game at the PoCo rec complex (2150 Wilson Ave.) at 6:45 p.m. Events continue throughout the week; visit www.portcoquitlam.ca.

HEARTS GALORE

LEARN TO WRITE

Join author Ben Nuttall-Smith as he leads a writing workshop at the Port Moody Public Library (100 Newport Dr.), from 2 to 4 p.m. (following the Federation of BC Writers' inaugural Tri-Cities meeting). OPEN THEATRE

Theatrix Youtheatre presents the Heart and Soul Arts Festival at the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam), featuring 120 students from the Theatrix Lunchbox Theatre program at four Coquitlam elementary schools. The public can watch theatre professionals Tony Barton and Tracy Neff work with the young performers from 10 a.m. to noon, finishing with a concert at 2 p.m. Concert tickets are $10 at the box office. PDA FAMILY DAY

Take part in Place des Arts' Family Day (1120 Brunette Ave.), featuring tours of three exhibitions ranging from a multi-media look at family history to the beauty of nature, followed by a variety of all-ages drop-in workshops, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. You can also take part in a public weaving session for PdA's Social Fabric Project (bring a special "thread" to weave into the 40th anniversary tapestry). Come back on Monday (and bring photocopied family pics) to celebrate B.C.'s first Family Day stat holiday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. to create family collages with Joy Hanser of ARTforce Collective. COFFEE CONCERT

Kick off Port Coquitlam's 14th annual Sunday Coffee Concert series with the sights and sounds of southern Spain, care of the Karen Flamenco dance company. PoCo hosts a Family Swim at Hyde Creek (1 to 5 p.m.), a toonie skate at the PoCo rec complex (1:30 to 3 p.m.), Stick and Puck ($4, 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. for 4-12 years; 3:15-4:30 p.m. for 13-18 years).
