A new-format church that's more like a talk show than a sermon is reaching out to young people in the Tri-Cities.
Called Velocity to convey movement, the church will be on Friday nights in Port Moody - instead of the typical Sunday morning - and aims to attract young adults in their mid-20s to mid-30s, said Alex Dolotov, one of the group leaders.
The first meeting is Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. and will feature a DJ, a comedian, music and snacks and will be held in an amenity room in Suter Brook Village in Port Moody (2nd floor, 400 Capilano Road). The parent church is Northside Foursquare Church in Coquitlam and about 30 young people have indicated an interest in the new format.
"It's a more freestyle and easy-going environment," said Dolotov. "We all come from sort of a normal kind of church setting Sunday worship and we have a different image or idea of how church can be different, but still have the elements of the church."
Donations are accepted but not required and will be used to support the church's social justice mission to stop human trafficking. The program begins at 7 p.m. and Dolotov, Jasmine Small and Lindsay Angus will be the pastors of the new church.
