Happy birthday, Coquitlam!
The city will mark its 120th year on Monday, July 25 but not much is being done to celebrate the occasion other than a few promotional logos on civic flyers, ads and street banners.
Still, it's come a long way since 1891 when the municipality of the District of Coquitlam was officially incorporated.
Back then, Frank Ross and James McLaren opened Fraser Mills, a state-of-the-art sawmill that cost $350,000, in what is now Maillardville.
Since then, Coquitlam has grown to a population of more than 120,000 - 39% of which were born outside of Canada, and 40% of which are new immigrants who arrived between 2001 and 2005.
Coquitlam is the fifth largest city in the province.
