A heavy downpour of up to 70 millimetres of rain is expected in parts of Metro Vancouver.
Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning at 5 a.m. on Feb. 19 saying heavy rain at times is expected into the evening.
"An active frontal system will bring rain, heavy at times, to the Vancouver North Shore, Vancouver northeast and Howe Sound today and overnight,” said a meteorologist.
The warning also includes northeast areas such as Coquitlam, Port Moody and Maple Ridge. The warning does not include Vancouver.
In Vancouver, rainfall totals for the month of February are at 12 mm as of Feb. 19. In February 2024, the total rainfall for Vancouver was 85.7 mm.
Rainfall accumulation during this system is between 50 to 70 millimetres.
The heaviest rain will taper off overnight tonight as the low weakens and pushes inland.
"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible,” said Environment Canada.
Scattered showers will persist through Thursday.
Environment Canada also issued a wind warning for parts of Vancouver Island (Nanoose Bay to Campbell River) and the Sunshine Coast (Saltery Bay to Powell River).
"A low-pressure centre approaching Vancouver Island will generate strong southeast winds of 70 kilometres per hour gusting to 90 late this morning and early afternoon,” stated the warning.
A wind warning is also in effect for the west coast of Vancouver Island. Strong southeast winds of 80 km/h gusting to 100 are expected to develop over that region. The winds will ease and become westerly early Wednesday afternoon as the low moves over Vancouver Island and weakens.
