The Madison Care Centre in Coquitlam has had its COVID-19 outbreak declared over after six deaths were declared.

A coronavirus outbreak at a long-term care home in Coquitlam has been declared over after staff and residents battled the virus for more than five weeks.

Declared Jan. 3, a month later the outbreak at The Madison Care Centre had led to the deaths of six residents and the infection of 18 people including 13 residents and five staff members.

It’s not clear whether those numbers have risen in the days since Feb. 3, the last time the BC Centre for Disease Control last updated cases at the facility.

There is now a single active outbreak at a Tri-Cities long-term care home: Eagle Ridge Manor, which sits next to Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody, has been under Fraser Health outbreak protocols since Jan. 17. As of Feb. 3, three cases and no deaths have been reported at the facility.

The Madison was among four long-term care outbreaks declared over across Fraser Health Monday; the others included Evergreen Baptist Care Society in White Rock, St. Michael’s Centre in Burnaby and Suncreek Village in Surrey.

At the same time Fraser health declared a COVID-19 outbreak over at Surrey Memorial Hospital, it also announced a new active outbreak at Abbotsford Regional Hospital after two patients and two staff members tested positive for the coronavirus.

The mixed news in acute care comes as health officials attribute the progress in long-term care outbreaks to the province’s vaccination campaign as well as other infection control measures.

There are currently 11 outbreaks at acute care facilities and long-term care homes in Fraser Health, down from 14 as of last Friday.
