Fraser Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak over at the assisted living facility at Hawthorne Seniors Care Community in Coquitlam after several weeks of teams working to eliminate the coronavirus.
The announcement was made Sunday, Dec. 6, bringing to an end a difficult ordeal for residents and staff at the assisted living apartment. However, the outbreak at the long-term care facility has not been declared over.
Hawthorne Seniors Care Community in Port Coquitlam is an assisted living facility that is owned and operated by the Port Coquitlam Senior Citizens’ Housing Society.
For weeks, Fraser Health staff and the home’s workers having been battling two simultaneous COVID-19 outbreaks at the facility.
At Hawthorne’s assisted living facility, where the outbreak has been declared over, the virus led to the deaths of another two residents, infecting a total of 25 residents and nine workers.
At the home’s long-term care unit, a single resident has died, with a total of five residents and five staff testing positive for the virus, as of late last week.
In an interview Dec. 4 with Fraser Health president and CEO Dr. Victoria Lee, the head of the health authority said teams are monitoring the long-term care and assisted living outbreaks “multiple times a day.”
